University of Tasmania (UTAS)
Overview
The story began over 130 years ago, in a sandstone building overlooking Hobart. Since those early days, with three lecturers teaching eleven students, the core purpose has remained the same. Through academic excellence, both the local home and the wider world are made a better place.
Here, success requires a certain determination and imagination. Due to an isolated location and small population, work has always had to be approached differently. It is this environment that makes Tasmanians such creative thinkers and problem solvers, resulting in powerful ideas being generated both for and from the island.
Here, the environment is nurtured just as it nurtures those within it.
Just as the winds and elements shaped this land, this land shapes all undertaken endeavors. That is why, today, a continuous fight is maintained to protect this island home. As a university, some of the last great natural environments on the planet are studied and preserved. From these island shores, research is extended to the great Southern Ocean and down to the Antarctic.
Here, everything is connected.
The vast Southern Ocean is pondered by literature students. Songs are sung by scientists. Designs are created by doctors. Entrepreneurship is pursued by teachers. Devotion to sheltering the needy is demonstrated by architects.
Unique land and seascapes are captured by creative minds, serving as a reminder of why the island is worth fighting for. Stories that resonate far away are told. Leadership in medical, agricultural, social, and environmental research is provided by the institution's facilities. The testing of big ideas is enabled by the small setting, leading to greater outcomes for the world.
All enquiring minds, from near and far, are welcomed to join this pursuit. Every student is made part of a welcoming, collaborative community, and the entire island becomes their campus.
This is the University of Tasmania.
